Overview

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) was formally awarded university status in 1993, but its history dates back to 1875. It is one of the largest universities in Scotland, with 23,000 students from over 135 different countries enrolled, and is the top modern university in Scotland.

Glasgow Caledonian University is known for its excellent links with industry. Many courses have accreditation from professional bodies and offer work placements. The University is a major provider of NHS healthcare graduates in Scotland. Glasgow Caledonian is also known for pioneering specialist degrees such as tourism management and fashion marketing.

Edinburgh Napier University gained full university status in June 1992 and currently has around 12,500 students enrolled. The University is largely located in Edinburgh’s east end, in buildings ranging from castles to old schools. It is one of Scotland’s top universities for graduate employability, offering work placements with many courses. Edinburgh Napier has a strong reputation for film education in partnership with the Edinburgh College of Art.

The University has around 3,000 students studying degrees in Hong Kong, Singapore and India through international partnerships, while dual-degree courses are also available with New York State University – enabling students to complete a four-year degree course at both institutions.

Edinburgh Napier is ranked eighth in the UK for ‘value added’, which measures students' entry qualifications against the degree results they go on to achieve. The University also runs ‘Confident Futures’, a programme which develops employability skills.

24,000 students from over 80 countries are enrolled at Birmingham City University, making it an exciting and diverse place to study. Birmingham City University has a large number of part-time students enrolled, making it the largest provider of undergraduate study in the area. Birmingham City University is one of the top 30 universities in the UK for spending on facilities, and in the most recent National Student Survey, 84% of students were happy with their course, while 87% agreed that faculty staff were good at explaining classes and teaching.

Nottingham Trent University is spread across three campuses, two in Nottingham and one just outside the city, and it is one of the largest universities in the UK with 28,000 students currently enrolled. Nottingham Trent was originally founded in 1843 before officially gaining full university status in 1992. 93% of Nottingham Trent students would recommend studying at at the University following the National Student Survey and it was named 'University of the Year' by Times Higher Education for 2018.

Nottingham Trent University is best known for its Art and Design, Fashion and creative arts programmes, but it also hosts one of the UK’s largest law schools. The University also does well in sports, with strong performances in the British University and College Sport leagues. The University recently received one of the biggest grants to a post-1992 university to continue its work on cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Robert Gordon University is a modern university based in the Scottish city of Aberdeen. Although it was granted university status in 1992, it was founded as an educational institution in the mid-18th century. Robert Gordon has a strong focus on vocational degrees, and brands itself as ‘The Professional University’. It currently has a little over 16,000 students, of whom more than 1,000 are international, enrolled.

The focus on professional education is shown by the University’s leading graduate employment record. It has been rated as having the highest graduate prospects of any University several times in recent years and remains top for modern universities. This is achieved through strong links with industry, particularly North Sea gas and oil companies, and year-long work placements that have become standard across all courses.

The University of Roehampton is based on a large parkland campus in south-west London. It became an independent university in 2004, but dates back to four teacher training colleges founded in the 19th century. These separate colleges have remained, and every student joins one of the four when they join the University. Roehampton has a highly international student body of 8,000 students from 110 different countries.

As a result of its history, teacher training remains a key strength of the University, but it is also highly regarded in the areas of Dance, Biological Anthropology, Drama and English Literature programmes. The Swiss Glion Institute of Higher Education offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in hospitality, and the University has also recently started offering online courses in business and medical subject areas.
